Sexual assault on women and girls is one of the most significant security concerns for females living in refugee and internally displaced person camps in Sub-Saharan Africa. Sustained displacement of populations in this region as a result of political instability, armed conflict and natural disasters often leads to an increase in all forms of violence, including rape and SGBV. This paper aims to identify successful strategies that have been implemented to prevent sexual assault associated with the collection of firewood. Through review of relevant literature and the collection of best practices by humanitarian organizations, this paper identifies gaps in current research and suggests areas in need of further study.
